WELCOME TO
THE INTEGRATED PRACTICE
UNIT (IPU)
In Alignment with Egypt Healthcare Authority and Egypt Vision 2030, the Integrated Practice
Unit is to bring together clinical and supportive cancer care through a multidisciplinary team
(MDT) approach to enhance health services and meet local needs. Our focus is on prevention,
better patient outcomes, a smoother care journey, and delivering value-based healthcare.
Together, we make healthcare more accessible, effective, and patient-centered.
Cancer Care Enhancement Strategies & Co-Location of Services
• Adopt a patient-centric, evidence-based approach to ensure high-quality, personalized cancer care.
• Improve care coordination by streamlining communication and workflows across healthcare teams.
• Ideally, all necessary services (e.g., diagnostics, surgery, chemotherapy, rehabilitation) are provided in one setting to improve efficiency.
• Empower patient engagement by promoting education, self-care, and shared decision-making in prevention, treatment, and survivorship.
• Electronic health records (EHRs), and telemedicine support data-driven decisions and remote patient monitoring.
• Optimize MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) performance using structured assessment tools to improve collaboration and decision-making.
• Optimize Integral Referal System across Primary-Secondary Coordination for a “Faster Diagnosis process”.
• Expand palliative and supportive care services to address physical, emotional, and psychological needs throughout the care journey.
• Foster shared decision-making by involving patients and caregivers in treatment choices to improve satisfaction and adherence.
Comprehensive Cancer Management
• Implement value-based healthcare to prioritize treatments that deliver the best patient outcomes while optimizing resources.
Cancer Case Management
• Develop individualized care plans that guide patients from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship.
• Provide patient navigation services to help individuals overcome barriers to care, such as financial, logistical, and emotional challenges.
• Monitor treatment adherence and follow-up care to reduce complications, improve outcomes, and enhance quality of life.
Cancer Diagnosis Pathway Analysis & Emergency Department Performance
• Assess primary and secondary care data to identify gaps and areas for improvement in cancer diagnosis and treatment.
• Monitor patient wait times and diagnostic delays from symptom onset to hospitalization to enhance timely access to care.
• Evaluate MDT chair leadership skills using the Tumor Leadership Assessment Instrument to strengthen team effectiveness and coordination.
• Monitor treatment adherence and follow-up care to reduce complications, improve outcomes, and enhance quality of life
• Cancer Diagnosis Pathway Analysis and Emergency Department Performance enhancement.
• Evaluation of primary and secondary care data for improvement.
• Measurement of patient wait times and time from symptom onset to hospitalization.
• Optimization of MDT performance using assessment tools.
• Evaluation of MDT chair leadership skills using Tumour Leadership Assessment Instrument.
From Departmental Speciality Care to Integrated Practice Care
- From July to November 2024, an IPU readiness Assessment visits to the Ismailia Medical Complex-part of Egypt Authority Healthcare
- An Advisory ‒ IPU Consortium assessed patient pathways for solid and hematologic cancers, focusing on structuring an Integrated Oncology Care Unit and enhancing capacity for streamlined care.
- Brought together specialists in solid and hematological tumors, pharmacy, and nursing to plan an Integrated Oncology Care Unit. A dedicated training program was then scheduled (November 2024) to reshape care pathways and establish unified cancer treatment protocols into IPU standards to meet the Local Health care needs.
